Two products both labelled collagen freeze-dried powder can range from a dozen to several hundred yuan. Much of the gap is in process and activity retention, not the bottle.

Freeze-drying is not just powder in a vial

The full cycle: the liquid is frozen to about -40°C, then in a vacuum of 1.3-13 Pa at -10°C to -50°C the ice sublimates directly into vapour, over roughly 72 hours. Actives are barely heat-damaged and reconstitute close to original state.

Where the cost sits

  • Equipment and energy: a freeze-dryer runs three days; electricity, depreciation and cleanroom upkeep spread across every vial.

  • Yield and batch stability: freeze-drying is window-sensitive; poor control scraps a whole batch.

  • Activity retention: dry-state stability allows far fewer preservatives - hard for liquid serums to match.

  • Formula ceiling: ingredients like recombinant collagen are themselves costly and capacity-limited.

How to judge value

Do not read only the word "freeze-dried". Check three things: ingredient origin (recombinant vs animal), active content and specification, and valid filing/registration. VIRIBIO's Recombinant Type III Collagen set uses genetically engineered humanised collagen, made by Guangzhou Weitai Biotechnology (licence Yue Zhuang 20160036), group-wide six bases over 150,000 m2, freeze-drying to the standard above.

In short: process sets the floor, formula sets the ceiling. A 9.9-yuan "freeze-dried powder" and a proper one differ in the production line, not the marketing budget.
