Recombinant Type III Humanised Collagen, common on ingredient lists, is a long name with three layers of meaning.
Recombinant: genetic engineering, not animal extraction
Traditional collagen is extracted from porcine tendon, bovine hide or fish skin - a xenogeneic protein whose batches vary with raw material. Recombinant collagen puts human collagen gene fragments into an expression system (usually microbial fermentation) to produce a sequence identical or near-identical to the human one, with no animal-source viral risk.
Type III: the collagen subtype
Skin collagen is mainly type I and III. Type III is proportionally higher in the superficial dermis and, with type I, forms the supporting network tied to a plump, bouncy, firm feel.
Humanised: sequence close to the body's own
Humanised means the sequence is designed to resemble human collagen, so skin recognises and accepts it more readily, lowering rejection and sensitivity risk.
What it does in skincare
Three jobs: support (skin density), hydration (water retention), and repair (a friendlier recovery environment for a damaged barrier). It does not replace sunscreen or aesthetic procedures - it is one part of daily care.
