“Recombinant collagen” and “collagen” differ by one word and often several times the price. The difference is origin, not naming.
Animal-derived collagen: extracted from tissue
Traditionally extracted from porcine tendon, bovine hide or fish skin. Cheap and well-established, but it is a xenogeneic protein — your immune system recognises it as non-human, so people sensitive to foreign proteins may react. It also requires rigorous viral inactivation, and batch consistency depends heavily on raw material.
Recombinant collagen: expressed by genetic engineering
Human collagen gene fragments are introduced into an expression system (commonly microbial fermentation) to produce collagen fragments identical or highly similar to the human sequence. Three key differences:
- Sequence homology — humanised sequence, harder for the immune system to flag as foreign.
- High purity, consistent batches — a controlled fermentation system, not dependent on animal lots.
- No animal-source viral risk — no viral inactivation step needed.
The trade-off is cost and production capability — which is why recombinant products are generally more expensive.
What "type III" means
Skin collagen is mainly type I and type III. Type III is proportionally higher in the superficial dermis and, together with type I, forms the supporting network. So "recombinant type III humanised collagen" carries three pieces of information: recombinant (origin), type III (collagen type), humanised (sequence).
How to tell which one a product uses
Read the ingredient list: “collagen” or “hydrolysed collagen” usually means animal-derived; “recombinant collagen” or “recombinant type III humanised collagen” means genetically engineered. VIRIBIO's Recombinant Type III Collagen freeze-dried set and Medical Recombinant Type III Humanised Collagen Dressing both use the latter.
