A common question: the powder is running low — can I reconstitute it with another brand's solvent? Or I have half a bottle of solvent left — can I tip it into a newly bought vial? The answer is a clear no.

The solvent is not just water

A solvent is formulated for a specific powder: pH, osmolality, buffer system and small amounts of protective agents are all set so that particular powder dissolves fully and stays stable for a short window after reconstitution. Switching brands changes that chemical environment. The most common result is incomplete dissolution — an invisible film of powder on the glass — meaning part of the active ingredient is wasted.

Three concrete risks

  • Incomplete dissolution — a pH mismatch makes protein-based ingredients precipitate or clump; it looks dissolved but is actually suspended.

  • Unpredictable stability — preservative and chelator systems from two brands are not necessarily compatible.

  • No way to attribute a reaction — if redness or stinging follows, you cannot tell which component caused it.

A more common mistake: mineral water or toner

Mineral water contains calcium and magnesium ions that react with some ingredients; toners often carry alcohol, acids or fragrance. Neither belongs in a freeze-dried vial.

The right way

  • Use the solvent supplied by the same brand, ideally the same batch.

  • Reconstitute just before use; refrigerate at 0–6°C and use within 2–3 days.

  • Store unopened vials in a cool, dry, dark place — no freezing needed.

  • If you do mix brands, patch-test behind the ear or on the inner wrist for 24 hours first.
